Storm Doors Galore Door Guide

ProVia, Larson, or Andersen Storm Door: How to Compare the Options

Brands Materials and Features

Compare ProVia, Larson, and Andersen by the exact door model, the way its screen works, and whether its frame and handle fit your entry. A brand name alone does not answer those questions. Our recommendation is to rule out fit problems first, then compare the features you will use and the complete installation scope.

Storm Doors Galore installs all three brands in Columbus, Delaware, Sunbury, Pickerington, and Grove City, Ohio. This guide helps you prepare a useful shortlist rather than declaring one brand the winner for every home. For the broader buying process, start with our storm door buying guide.

What to compare across the three brands

Each manufacturer offers more than one approach to glass, screens, and hardware. Compare equivalent configurations before judging a quote. A decorative full-glass door and a retractable-screen door answer different household needs, even when both appear under the same brand.

ProVia: start with the series

ProVia lists five storm door series: Spectrum, Decorator, Deluxe, DuraGuard, and SuperView. Spectrum includes InVent retractable screens. Decorator emphasizes full-view glass with decorative designs and an optional full screen. DuraGuard includes styles with a heavy-duty stainless steel screen and glass insert.[9]

That makes the series name a useful starting point. Ask whether the proposed model has a screen that stays in the door or a panel you will remove and store. If decorative glass is the reason you prefer ProVia, identify that glass choice in the estimate instead of assuming it comes with every ProVia model. Our ProVia installation page covers the local service.

Larson: match the configuration to your routine

Larson organizes its current storm door selection into full-view, partial-view, retractable, interchangeable, pet-friendly, and security collections. Its site also presents different series and hardware features rather than one uniform door specification.[10]

Use those categories to narrow the search, then ask for the model number and its included handle and closer. Do not treat a feature pictured on the manufacturer homepage as standard across the brand. If you want frequent ventilation, ask to see how the proposed screen opens and closes. If you prefer interchangeable panels, consider where you will store the panel you are not using.

Andersen: compare the screen and installation system

Andersen describes full-view interchangeable options and retractable designs that provide ventilation without swapping panels. Its Quick Change system applies to select interchangeable storm doors, not every model.[11]

Andersen also distinguishes Rapid Install 1, Rapid Install 2, and Pro Install systems. Its installation page describes Rapid Install 1 as prehung, Rapid Install 2 as an unassembled, universally handed option with precut Z-bars, and Pro Install as an unassembled system with a Z-bar that can be cut to length.[13] Ask which system comes with the quoted door. An installation-system name is not a promise about how long your particular project will take.

Check the opening before choosing the handle

Width and height are only part of fit. The space between the storm door and the main entry door matters too. ProVia’s expander-door instructions specifically require checking for interference between the two handle sets before installation.[4] A matching finish is little help if the handles collide.

For an initial discussion, photograph the full opening, exterior trim, threshold, and existing handle from the side. Include a close view of any projecting deadbolt or lever. Ask the installer to confirm the proposed storm door handle position and projection against that hardware before the order is settled.

Larson’s current measuring article calls for width measurements at the top, middle, and bottom, using the narrowest or smallest measurement as the width. It also directs homeowners to measure inside the edges of the brickmold.[20] Keep the full set of measurements for the installer and confirm the mounting requirements in the guide for the selected model.

ProVia’s expander system illustrates why the mounting method also belongs in the comparison. Its instructions describe an inset installation within the jamb opening, not an exterior surface mount, and require field measuring and cutting of expanders and other parts.[4] Do not assume those instructions describe every ProVia installation. Have the installer use the guide for the actual system being ordered.

For Andersen, confirm the entry opening and trim against the selected model before ordering, as its installation guidance requires.[13] Carry that same model-specific discipline through the comparison. A nominal door size on a label is not a substitute for checking the opening.

Choose the screen you want to live with

Try to separate appearance from daily operation. Write down whether you want a clear glass view most of the time, frequent access to ventilation, or a particular lower-panel arrangement. Then compare the shortlisted models against that preference.

Ask to see a demonstration or the manufacturer’s operating instructions. Check how you would reach the screen control, switch panels, and hold the door open while carrying something through it. If another household member will use the door differently, include that person in the choice. Our screen door options guide explains the configuration choices in more detail.

A useful shortlist might contain one exact model from each brand, with the same desired glass-and-screen arrangement. It need not contain all three if one cannot meet the opening requirements. Record any unresolved fit question beside the model rather than treating it as a detail to solve after purchase.

Compare the installed project, not just the door

Ask each estimate to name the model, size, finish, glass or screen configuration, handle set, and closer. Then ask what the installation covers: removal of an existing storm door, preparation of the mounting area, installation, adjustment, and cleanup. Have any work outside the agreed scope identified before approving the project.

If an old door is coming out, use our storm door replacement page to frame that discussion. For a new installation, see storm door installation. The installation cost page explains why the product and opening need to be considered together. A brand comparison cannot give you a reliable installed price without that project information.

Keep the installation warranty separate

Storm Doors Galore provides a two-year warranty for ProVia projects and a one-year warranty for Larson and Andersen projects. These are Storm Doors Galore warranties, not manufacturer warranties. Ask for the applicable terms with your estimate.

Compare those project warranties separately from any manufacturer document supplied with the selected product. Do not assume the duration alone describes every covered condition. This guide does not summarize manufacturer warranty coverage or rank the brands by it.

Bring a short comparison sheet to the estimate

You do not need to settle every feature before contacting Paul. A useful starting note includes:

  • Your city and whether this is a new installation or a replacement.
  • The exact model names or manufacturer links you are considering.
  • The glass-and-screen arrangement you prefer and how often you expect to change it.
  • Any known handle collision, tight trim, uneven opening, or damaged mounting area.
  • The items you want stated explicitly in the installation estimate.

Leave uncertain measurements marked as approximate. Ask which details need confirmation before ordering. The goal is a door whose documented features suit your household and whose installation requirements fit the opening. You can find the related selection and replacement articles in our door guides library.
